It is a test to check the patency of the lacrimal drainage system, as not all watery eyes are due to a blockage in the tear drainage passages. The lacrimal drainage system consists of an opening in the inner corner of the upper and lower eyelids called the punctum. The punctum opens into a canaliculus that runs along the edge of the upper and lower eyelids. The two canaliculi join to form a common canaliculus that in turn enters into the lacrimal sac that is situated between our eye and the side wall of the nose. The lacrimal sac then drains via the nasolacrimal duct, that runs along the side of the nose to finally open into the nose under a structure called the inferior turbinate. To check the patency of this system a sac syringing is performed.PROCEDURE: A 2ml syringe containing some saline solution (sterile salty solution) is attached to a lacrimal canula. The patients head is bent backwards and the canula which has a blunt end is inserted into the punctum and advanced into the canaliculus. The saline is then squirted into the canaliculus via the canula. If the salty solution enters the throat after flushing the lacrimal system, it is evidence of the system being patent. If there is a blockage along the system, then the saline will not enter the nose and flow into the throat, but will regurge back into the eye and we then know that there is a blockage in the system. The appropriate treatment choice can then be discussed with the patient.

Intravitreal injections are used to administer drugs in the eye to treat eye diseases and protect vision. Through an injection, the appropriate medication is introduced into the vitreous cavity, a space located at the back of the eye, behind the lens.Injecting these medications directly into the vitreous cavity can treat certain eye diseases and protect vision. Some of the diseases that most frequently require intravitreal injections are:AMD (age-related macular degeneration), a degenerative disease that affects the central area of the retina (macula) and causes loss of central vision.Choroidal neovascular membrane secondary to several retinal diseases (e.g., high myopia, central serous choroidopathy, etc.)Macular edema (thickening of the macula), the most frequent are the following:Infections inside the eye (endophthalmitis)Swelling inside the eye (uveitis). The injections are administered in an operating theatre under topical anaesthesia. Before proceeding, the eye and eyelids are disinfected, under aseptic conditions. It is a usually fast and painless procedure, and causes little discomfort in the postoperative period.

The vitreous is the clear, gel-like substance that makes up the center of the eye. It accounts for approximately two-thirds of the eye's volume and helps maintain its shape. Due to its consistency, the vitreous can be affected by various diseases that may cause it to cloud, clump together, or even fill with blood, thereby making it difficult for light to properly reach the retina. This may result in blurred vision, retinal tears or detachments, or other serious conditions.Patients with certain diseases may benefit from a vitrectomy. This procedure involves removing the vitreous by cutting and suctioning it out with tiny instruments that are inserted into the eye. Removal of the vitreous is necessary for unimpeded access to the retina. Your surgeon may then treat the retina with a laser, cut or remove scar tissue, flatten detached areas of the retina, or repair holes or tears in the retina. Patients may experience mild discomfort and redness for several days after this procedure. The vitreous that is removed does not grow back, but is replaced by fluid that is normally produced by the eye. This gel was important during the development of the eye but is not necessary following birth for eye health or focusing.Although results vary depending on the individual condition treated, most patients experience improved visual acuity following this procedure. Vitrectomy is sometimes necessary when treating conditions, such as macular holes, macular puckers, retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy, vitreous hemorrhage or an infection in the eye (endophthalmitis). At our clinic which is a retina speciality centre, we offer the latest 27 gauge vitrectomy modality for our patients to help them recover faster.
